It is related to the Rewarewa. The macadamia was named after Dr John Macadam, scientist, philosopher and politician A member of the Proteaceae family, the macadamia is a large evergreen tree that can grow to 20 metres if not pruned. Nuts are produced after about 4 years. They have a green fibrous husk outside the hard brown shell, and then within the shell is the creamy white kernel. There are 2 edible species - the pink flowering Tetraphylla and the white flowering Integrifolia. Macadamia nuts are a delicious high energy food than can reduce cholesterol by 7% over 4 weeks if 6 -20 are eaten daily. The monounsaturated oil lowers the risk of heart disease. They also contain selenium, vitamins E, A1, B1 and B2. |
